Forme explores the relationship between: organism and artefact.

Inspired by Jean Baudrillard's iconic text: Simulacra and Simulation (1981), a theory central to the post modern assertion that we are living in a hyperreality - a composition of many references with no single reference. Baudrillard wrote that our desire for "simulation" (reproducibility) had replaced our need for a real referent. According to Baudrillard's philosophy, there are four stages of reproduction. The first being: a basic copy of the real, the second a subversion of the real, the third a fabrication of the real. Whilst at the conclusion of the fourth stage of reproduction, Baudrillard suggests Simulacrum is not a reproduction of the real, but rather "bears no relation to any reality whatsoever." It has in effect become a truth in its own right.

Using the origins of the botanic, nature's most proud 'original' moment, as a thematic starting point - Forme uses the design element of a pattern repeat to subvert our concept of the original by replacing it with a reproduction. Creating an image that sees the original as a continuing repeat of never ending reproducibility. Referring to both nature's inherent ability to reproduce in a biological sense, and man's desire to reproduce in a synthetic sense - the origin versus the artifice.

Using elements of hand drawing, to reference the primitive genesis of the handmade, the works are created from a collation of found imagery, ink drawings and photographs and reproduced in the form of mixed media digital prints. The interest in making the work is to create a hyperreality that strives to meet Baudrillard's fourth stage of simulation. A complete abstract utopia.

The work is representative of a personal interest in neurotransmitters and pattern recognition, cerebral stimulation and the search for coherent meaning - a meaning that remains consistently unattainable.

I am strangely fascinated by the underbelly of deep sea life. I admire the unique fluid forms of these creatures. These species were photographed by scientists from the Queensland Brain Institute at Osprey Reef (NE Cairns), at more than 1000 metres below sea level.

Here are some photos of the studio open day, held in late april, to celebrate the recent refurbishment of the Mercator Studios at the Abbotsford Convent. For those with a historical interest the site used to house the servant laundry quarters for the convent.
The renovation is a great initiative that received a significant injection of funding from the Sidney Myer foundation in conjunction with the Abbotsford Convent. There are 11 studio residents in total, including the very talented glass artist Philip Stokes and lighting designer Volker Haug.

I am in love with Michael Nyman, he is an absolutely incredible composer and pianist.

Last night Michael Nyman and his band performed a one off show at Hammer Hall. Most of the works they played covered the Peter Greenaway greats; The Draughtsman's Contract, Drowning by Numbers, A Zed and Two Noughts and Prospero's Books...the absolute highlight for me was the recital of 'Big My Secret' from The Piano.

Although...I don't think you can get much better than this modern composition from The Draughtsman's Contract (1982). Do you think there is something inherently English about this sound?

Fresh new cushion covers made from the black and white colourways. I sourced a beautiful organic hemp/cotton canvas basecloth for this print run. The cushions come in two new sizes a 40cm and 60cm and are designed to sit together.

Cacti Monsoon, black 60cm

Unlike its meditative counterpart, Cacti Monsoon is a torrent of energy. It makes a loving partner for the Monk though, as the fleshy stems of its plant have a sting similar to the jellyfish.

The cushion measures 60cm square, with a side zip fastening. Fabric is screen-printed with solvent free ink on an organic hemp cotton canvas (13-oz) base cloth. Colourways are black on cream.

The Monk Jellyfish is revered for its marine like qualities. It is transparent underwater and loves to spray its tentacles about. When it comes up for air it seeks sun and the company of others.

This drawing was a commission and I completed it in early autumn. It references an orchid (surprise surprise) on the left and a wild tulip to the right. It was done with pen and ink on watercolour paper.

Audio Mulch has just launched its latest software version 2.0 for mac and pc. The whole site and product has been re-branded and was a collaborative effort by myself (illustration and branding), and the very clever and talented boys; Tony at H4 and Nic, aka Aodhan.
The website banner above was done mostly in illustrator and for the splash screen I took some elements from the website and clipped them for the splash page background.

Ross has posted a live patching demo at vimeo that illustrates the amazing depth of this software. For all you audio enthusiasts out there make sure you register and become part of the action!

In my opinion, Steve Coogan is a comic genius. His stand-up show kicked off last thursday at the Melbourne comedy festival. For those in the dark, Coogan burst onto the global stage with his staring role in Michael Winterbottom's '24 Hour Party People'; recounting Tony Wilson and the demise of Factory Records.

Others may remember him more fondly from his character in the award winning BBC drama I'm Alan Partridge. A self-proclaimed sex addict, cocaine-fuelled bastard, one could argue Alan Partidge is Coogan's embellished alter ego- but I'll leave that for the viewers to decide!

Coogan's closing words "everybody's a bit of a c--- sometimes" sums up the shows modern take on Monty Python theatrics perfectly.

Well, its been awhile between prints, but here is the latest fabric from orchis morio. This is loosely based on cactii leaves and samurai swords. If you're looking for a connection between the two you probably wont find any, but that is the point to some extent!

The base is a natural cotton drill, at 200gsm, with an olive print.

Last saturday Craft Victoria hosted the March Craft Hatch Market. A very successful day for all designers. Thanks for all the wonderful support. Here are some pictures of from the orchis morio stall. The Craft Hatch market kicks off this Saturday, with a launch of fresh new fabric prints and cushion covers for sale from the Orchis Morio studio.

Fabric will be available to purchase by the metre. Wholesale orders can be placed on the day for selected colourways.

Other designers on show will be: Tasha Hassapis (from Mixmasha), Deirdre Hoban and Jasmine Targett (jewellers), and more...

The Fox and the Crow is a new show opening this thursday at Guildford Lane Gallery, from Amina McPhee, Rhiannon Smith and Nicole Collins (fellow studio practitioners)

Based on a Aesop's fable of the same name, the show explores the evolution of jewellery and garment design.

With the recent devastation sweeping across Victoria at the moment, it seems hard to post as normal.

Here is a link to an interesting article titled, 'Media Circus Upsets Bushfire Survivors'.

It acknowledges both sides to the argument around media and privacy; that is the role that the Media plays in allowing people to express their stories, and the distress this excessive and intrusive coverage can cause those involved.

Having said that, here ironically is a positive commendation of the ABC's recent news broadcasts, many of which have been worthy to the cause. And along with that, a small suggestion to urge readers to donate to the red cross foundation.

The ladies at Ink and Spindle have officially launched their screen printing web site. A must visit for all textile enthusiasts. I have been following this blog since it started mid way through last year, and it has been amazing to watch the process Lara, Bianca and Tegan went through to set up their practice.

They've also posted some tutorials on yardage printing.

The MONA FOMA festival kicked off in Hobart over January. FOMA is a new festival of music and art in Tasmania. The festival is presented by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), which is due to open in 2011.

Discord: Art from MONA presented French artist Celeste Boursier-Mougenot's installation in the Long Gallery at the Salamanca Arts Space. You can view a part of the work online here
